Sonic Theories, Sonic Art Practices: Unlimited

Module number:M-MA-2, M-MD
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:
Credit Points:6
Dates:Thu 10-14h, room 2.10.090
Information:This is the continuation of Sonic Theories, Sonic Art Practices, a special topics course invested in readings by sonic theorists, artists, and philosophers with a focus on notions of ecology, land- and soundscape, and sonic materialism; in addition, throughout the last term, each student worked on sonic experiments and a comprehensive sound project. This term we want to lay focus on concepts by Gilles Deleuze and Gilbert Simondon in relation to sonic thinking, poiesis and praxis. We engage in select readings and continue with our experimentation in sound. We welcome other sonophile students interested in joining the group. Current students ask, however, that newcomers prepare by reading last semester's Reader. If you wish to find out more, please come to the first session on April 6 at 10am, room 2 10.090. Limited seats only. You may also email me in advance if you want to join and wish access to last term's reading material for preparation.

additional informationen:

Technical audio skills are not a prerequisite. Very good knowledge of the English language a must. Newcomers prepare by reading last semester's Reader.

The Quantified Velodrome

Module number:M-MA-2, M-MD
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:
Credit Points:6
Dates:Tu 10-14h, room 2.11.080
Information:The Quantified Velodrome: Real-Time Position Tracking and Responsive Information Visualization

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Bremer_Sechstagerennen-%282014%29-01.jpg
Todays six day velodrome races are both spectacle and sport. Unfortunately many spectators have a hard time following the races: Not only are some of the track racing disciplines complicated, also, often when riders get lapped, it is challenging even for experts to tell what exactly is going on in a race.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-day_racing
Assuming we can track the exact position of a rider in real time, a number of interesting possibilities present themselves, in order to address the above problem and/or to enhance the viewing experience live at the venue or online. Depending on the application, interesting design challenges must be explored: For instance, could an augmented reality application work in the context of such a highly dynamic event in real time - or only with some spacial and/or temporal delay? What cognitive problems or possibilities arise?

It is conceivable that other sports could be focused on, providing similar issues are dealt with.

In this course concepts and designs for such applications will be developed. You will be asked to present your designs as simulations or animations. Ideally some specific issue or detail of some aspects of your design should be explored by implementing some experiment or testing environment. All of this shall be documented in a suitable way.

A full implementation of such applications is planned for the near future in cooperation with the UNI. The course is offered in conjunction with a bachelor course of the same topic.

Lecturer:
Credit Points:6
Dates:Mo 14-18h, room 3.04.090
Information:The Project Preparations course is intended to prepare you for the upcoming Master Project in the following semester. The course acts as an open platform for exchange of interests, research, theory, ideas and practice. Together we want to discuss current and not so current issues in technology, art and design. The platform should develop into a heterogeneous network of thoughts, experiments, dead ends, eureka moment and narratives. Furthermore we want to find out what a project is or could be by looking at the natomy of existing ones. The participants should narrow down a path for the upcoming Master Project.

You are the platform!

The Network of Absence/ texts, works, methods

Module number:M-MT
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:
Credit Points:6
Dates:Th 14-16h, room 3.04.090, first meeting 6th of april at 14h in room 3.04.090
Information:As absence leaves the space for you to fill in, it opens a space for interpretation, imagination, creation and experience. We are constantly surrounded with so much visual and sonic input that, at this point in time, absence appears to be a luxury, a mystery or a contemplative, even meditative idea in itself. Depending on a different context, absence of an element where it would usually be found is where the course begins. Here we would consider the absence of a theoretical text itself, in order to come back to it. In this fashion, the course will draw parallels between practice and theory, engaging students in both by means of one or the other.

From John Cage, Heiner Goebbels to Graham Harman, Anne Whitehead or Paul Virilio, we will engage in reading, writing, discussing and exercising absence. By exploring the gaps, glitches, memory and inversion, an idea can be defined by absence rather than presence, so rather by what it isn`t or what it lacks then by what it is.

As Gaston Bachelard said we can "read the house" (Gaston Bachelard, The poetics of space, Beacon Press 1994 [first published in french 1958]) furthermore, we could code a feeling or write a chair. Here, absence is seen as a diversion and is used as means of reduction and inversion of the objects properties to, perhaps, come up with new theories or pose new questions.

Zusätzliche Informationen:
