*hacks and hoaxes*

Module number:M-M-MA
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:Dennis Paul
Credit Points:6
Dates:Monday 10-14h // 2.10.080
Information:when we knowingly engage with a system, be it complex or simple, natural or technical, virtual or physical, we usually gain knowledge about it, by first observing and later by manipulating it. in those create by human beings ( e.g software systems or social systems ) we often find a *raison d´être* articulated as function or usability. we are designers of systems.

in this project we want to observe/learn/negotiate with different systems by enganging by means of two different methods: hacks and hoaxes.

Sound Culture

Module number:M-M-MA
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:Petra Klusmeyer
Credit Points:6
Dates:Tuesday 10-14h // 2.10.090
Information:This course explores developments in sound art from the early-20th century to the present and endeavors to cultivate a critical position toward listening and creating. By assessing works by artists who have blurred traditional boundaries of music, science, fine arts, and philosophy, we seek to discover some of the meeting points between experimental music, sound art and acoustic ecology. This investigation interweaves theory with practice, which means that the participant engages in reading, writing activities and in sonic experiments.

Technical audio skills are not a prerequisite. Very good knowledge of the English language a must.

University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:Tanja Diezmann
Credit Points:6
Dates:Wednesday 10-14h // 2.10.080
Information:Our daily lives are more than ever influenced and driven by networked processing devices. The complexity of digital consumption is increasing and sometimes exceeding our attention. Interactive services are mostly transferred to new device categories without thinking of accompanied the new requirements. This project will deal with new technologies and methods to enrich our daily life with useful and easy to perceive information. We will question these new opportunities and research their potential or new user experiences. The aim is not to create another gadget or app, but to seriously add value and comfort to reality. The project will touch the field of augmented reality, wearables, internet of things, smart environments or simply mobile. It will put the focus to examination, research and reflection and will lead to experimental objects, applications or interactive statements.

´Why does Google buy Nest?´

Module number:M-M-MD, M-MA2
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:Roland Lambrette
Credit Points:6
Dates:Thursday 14-18h // 2.11.100
Information:Interweaving space and information has a long history - from traditional guiding systems to information architecture to spatial communication and exhibition design in museums to smart buildings. Due to the increasing digitalization of space and the possibilty of tracking movements, interaction and interests/profiles of users we encounter new opportunities as well as new risks. Smart roads, smart intersections, toll collecting scanners, navigation systems etc. scan and interact with large scale movements while bluetooth beacons, wireless networks, movement detectors, temperature sensors (Nest!) and other high resolution tracking technologies etc. can pinpoint the position and activity of the user in interior spaces.

This potential of exact location based communication is a challenge for designers of digital media.
In this course you are invited to investigate the possibilities and develop concepts for connecting space and information in your own way - may it be playful or critical.
Depending on the international mix of students in this master course we can apply this topic also onto the different challenges of their home countries.

You may receive more information about this course in the digital media opening event for the summer term April 8th starting at 10 am in the Auditorium and/or in an information meeting on Thursday April 9th from 2pm to 3 pm in room 2.11.100.

Credit Points:6
Dates:Thursday 9-13h 3.04.090, every second week, Th 14:00 - 18:00, S4* 3 04.090 + one weekend(TBA), start: Thursday, 16.04.15 *segment 4
Information:The design prototype is about the process, the technological prototype is about results of research and development and the speculative prototype is about narration. Then what is the conceptual prototype about? It might be about the process of forming a new theory, or putting that theory to the test, but it is mostly about making the ´impossible´ connection trough synthesizing disciplines, challenging the arduous one-way process of transferring theoretical thinking into material housing. It is the ultimate interdisciplinary quest. This course will explore the relationship between thinking and doing, with a goal of developing a methodology on how to transfer abstract ideas into physical models and prototypes and vice versa.
