Design as Computation

Module new:M-MA-2
Module old:
University:HfK
Semester:1
Lecturer:Frieder Nake
Credit Points:6
Dates:Th 10-14 room 3.09.100 start: 18.10.12
Information:The title of the seminar already hints at "computational design", "generative design", "parametric design", or "algorithmic design" as the currently much debated and practiced design approaches. Indeed, we will study one paper from each of these areas. We take up a bit of recent developments of the design research discourse which we study insofar as from there we get an idea of why so many seem to be eager to combine and connect scientific and aesthetic thinking and acting when, perhaps, it would be more fruitful to emphasize their differences. A practical component will be embedded into the seminar in form of a workshop on Processing. Out of this, an effort will be made to create a contribution to the Hochschultage 2013.

screening the screen

Module new:M-MA-2
Module old:M-103
University:HfK
Semester:1
Lecturer:Roland Lambrette
Credit Points:6
Dates:Th 10-14
Information:We live with the screen. The monitor - in many sizes, shapes or resolutions - is our daily companion. At the same time it is a very small and narrow window into the wide world of digital media. Very often it is the weakest link in the long chain from the creative idea to the visible solution. Eventhough display technology is moving fast, we spend most of time looking at flat rectangular images which have not really changed since the invention of the CRT. This course will search for media design solutions which try to leave the usual ways of perception of screen-based visualisation. In individual design projects we will look for visual output solutions which may also be used in the following master project.

Module old:M-103
University:HfK
Semester:1
Lecturer:Joachim Hofmann
Credit Points:6
Dates:Wednesday 10-14 room 2.11.090 start 10.10.12
Information:"The line i trace with my feet walking around the museum is more important and more beautiful than the lines i find there hung up on the walls" - F.H. "Against the grain" - Friedensreich Hundertwasser Exhibition at Kunsthalle Bremen The exhibition dedicated to Friedensreich Hundertwasser, one of the most famous artists of the 20th century will display his work dated 1949 - 1970. A course that brings together bachelor and master students (winter term 2012/13) will escort and extend the exhibition within a 2-phased project. Part 1 Reenactment of the "Line of Hamburg" For this occasion the Kunsthalle Bremen, in collaboration with Bazon Brock and Students of the HFK Bremen led by Joachim Hofmann will reenact the "Line of Hamburg". Hereby we will paint the gallery room within the Kunsthalle in 54 hours beginning 15.00 on October 17th till 21.00 on Friday 19th. This action will be documented and communicated by our group. Part 2 Along the long line In the second part, we will take the line outside the museum, and move it through the city`s diverse environments until we reach HFK for the Hochschultage Exhibition in February 2013. We will use diverse material, break through walls, and conquer the room between distant spaces. The individual vision and artistic approach of the students will be of crucial importance. This project will be documented on paper and on film for the presentation at the Hochschultage 2013.

Politics and Computers. A Synoptical Medium

Module new:M-MD
Module old:M-103
University:HfK
Semester:1
Lecturer:Frieder Nake
Credit Points:6
Dates:Block of four weekends (Oct 19-21, Nov 9-11, Nov 23-25, Dec 7-9) 3.09.100, Fridays 14-17, Saturdays 12-18, Sundays 10-16
Information:We collect and select important events and developments in worldwide politics, in the home countries of participants, and in computing. We study, discuss, and document the selected events, and we generate a graph of mutual dependencies and influences. In particular, we try to better understand what it is that the power elites keep calling "financial crisis", "Euro crisis", "banking crisis", or otherwise. What if that crisis is nothing but a crisis of capitalism, albeit a deep and long and very serious crisis? The relation to the fluid postmodern medium of computation will catch our particular attention. We take all the findings, analyses, insights, speculations, and interpretations as the material we need for the synoptical design of an interactive medium. This medium should become an important contribution to Hochschultage 2013

On Politics of "Oppositional Taste"

Module new:M-MT
Module old:M-101-M-105
University:HfK
Semester:1
Lecturer:Claudia Reiche
Credit Points:6
Dates:Th 14-18 room 3.09.100 start 18.10.12
Information:"it`s good because it`s awful . . . Of course, one can`t always say that," writes Susam Sontag 1964, closing her famous essay "Notes On `Camp`". This essay describes a sensibility that regards something as delightful because it is below-and thus paradoxically above-common aesthetic and moral standards, with elements of artifice, frivolity, naïve middle-class pretentiousness, and excess. This sensibility Susan Sontag links especially to "homosexuality", which enables to establish an attitude towards "normality" in media and culture as if in "quotation marks". The course addresses this camp sensibility as one example of what might be called more generally a history of Oppositional Taste -attitudes of distaste and disagreement-and its various contexts and tactics. What about today`s counter cultures and media practices: How queer is camp, how trash is revolution and how cult is deviancy today? Is oppositional taste as taste for opposition possible under current conditions? The analysis will include performative and media artist`s tactics (Tanja Ostojic, Cornelia Sollfrank) as well as youth cultural phenomena like trash and cult cinema, as well as psychoanalytic Lacanian findings of today`s lacking symbolic father and `his` return as an obscene `real father` in media and political contexts -as a difficult base for" opposition". (Slavoj Zizek) Inevitably the question is: Are these cultural and political conditions good because they are awful?

Advanced Sound Culture: Sounding Out Time

Module new:M-MD
Module old:M-103
University:HfK
Semester:2
Lecturer:Petra Klusmeyer
Credit Points:6
Dates:Mo 15-17 room 2.10.090 start 15.10.12
Information:Sound Culture explores developments in sound art from the early twentieth century to the present; cultivates a critical ear for listening and creating, and lets us to discover some of the meeting points between experimental music, sound art and sound ecology. The objective of this advanced Sound Culture seminar is to apprehend the notion of time in relation to sonic matter. The question of "What is time?" does not afford an absolute answer to either natural scientists (such as physicists, cosmologists) or philosophers and seems (almost) irrelevant in this context. Instead we seek for tendencies that give us a glimpse toward an understanding of time as condition for sonic art and what this relation does to human (and nonhuman) bodies. Included in this investigation will be your independent work in sound praxis and theory.
Prerequisite: Previous attendance in (Intro to) Sound Culture
